One of the most joyful and wonderfully 'witchy' moments in Practical Magic is when the Owens women gathered together in the kitchen for their infamous Midnight Margaritas. Sally and Gillian join their aunts in a spellbinding evening of music, laughter, and dancing, turning an ordinary night into something utterly magical.
As the margaritas are mixed, the women chant their playful recipe:
“Eye of newt, toe of frog, wing of bat, tongue of dog.
Adder’s fork and blind worm’s sting,
Barbados lime is just the thing!
Cragged salt like a sailor’s stubble,
Flip the switch and let the cauldron bubble!”
It is one of those wonderfully eccentric Practical Magic moments where witchcraft, family and everyday life blur deliciously together.
And, naturally, no Midnight Margarita would be complete without the all-important Barbados lime. Our interpretation takes the form of a tiny lime-shaped wax-seal charm, finished with a luminous green peridot, set at midnight, as we designed the cross section of the lime to have exactly 12 segments to act as a clock-face.
Chosen for its vibrant green colour and traditional associations with renewal, positivity and protection, the peridot brings another little layer of meaning.
Turn the charm over and discover the incantation “Barbados lime is just the thing!” a secret little nod to one of the film’s most beloved moments.
Because every good witch knows that sometimes the most powerful potion is made from a little family, a little laughter, a little magic… and, of course, a Barbados lime!
